Advanced Cataract Surgery

A cataract is an eye condition in which the naturally transparent lens of the eye becomes cloudy, which interferes with the ability of the lens to properly focus light onto the retina in the back of the eye. This unfocused light causes the vision to look blurry, hazy, distorted or cloudy. Cataracts start as a slight cloudiness that increases as the lens becomes worse. This eye condition can cause light sensitivity, glare, double vision in one eye, poor night vision, and fading or yellowing of colors.

A common myth is that cataracts happen only in the elderly. But cataracts know no age. Trauma to the eye, steroid use, and other situations can also cause cataracts. However, it is true that approximately 90% of cataracts are age related. More than 50% of Americans over 60 have developed cataracts in one or both eyes, and just about everyone who lives long enough will eventually develop the thickening, stiffening and clouding of the lens known as cataracts.

Fortunately, a number of modern surgical techniques effectively treat cataracts. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most common and successful surgical procedures performed today. Drs. Berry, Stewart, and Nickell perform the most modern form of cataract surgery, called phacoemulsification. This surgery is performed through a very small incision that requires no stitches. Patients routinely comment that they never felt any pain at all. At Berry Stewart Eye Center, we place an emphasis on safety, and take great pride in a very low complication rate.

The only definitive treatment for cataracts is to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a new, clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens, or IOL.

There are a variety of lens implants available, and Drs. Berry and Stewart take great care in matching the right lens implant to your specific lifestyle needs. After a thorough, dilated exam of your eye, our doctors will personally discuss what you most want from your vision after surgery, so you can make the best decision possible. In the end, we will recommend a lens implant that will positively impact your vision when you do the things that are most important to you – in many cases without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

"My vision was terrible before surgery. I couldn't even see a street sign across the street. After having surgery on the first eye, my vision was very good and I was happy. Then I had the second eye done and was VERY happy with my vision. I had good care at Doctor's Surgery Center at Huguley. I couldn't ask for better attention. I would recommend cataract surgery by Dr. Stewart to anyone."

"I had a check-up at a local eye clinic and was told I was developing a cataract in my right eye. The clinic set me up with an ophthalmologist who came to the clinic periodically. At this visit, the technician started giving me instructions for the day of my cataract surgery, and yet I had not even decided if I wanted to have surgery and hadn't even met the surgeon! I felt uncomfortable with having the surgery decided for me. I left the clinic and contacted Dr. Berry's office for an appointment and second opinion. He discussed all the options with me, and we decided to wait on cataract surgery as my vision was adequate at that time. I ended up having the cataract surgery two years later with Dr. Berry, and was very pleased with the outcome. He is a real professional and truly a "people person." I'm very happy with his service."
