Laser Vision Correction
using Advanced Surface Ablation

This procedure has a long and proven track record. PRK (Photo-refractive keratectomy) was the first widely used surface ablation laser for vision correction, approved by the FDA in 1995. Now, advanced surface ablation is being used to give patients the safest, most effective laser vision correction available. Drs. Berry and Stewart are some of the few ophthalmologists in the area trained and certified to perform this procedure, having been trained in laser vision correction in residency.
Advanced surface ablation is essentially "LASIK without the flap." The surface epithelium is gently removed from the cornea, followed by the use of an excimer "cold" laser (we use the latest VISX S4 laser technology) to sculpt an area on the surface of the eye to make accurate and specific corrections to patient's vision. Because the procedure does not require cutting a flap in the cornea, the inherent risks of creating a flap are eliminated. There are also fewer dry eye side effects with surface ablation than with LASIK. Recently, many ophthalmic surgeons have switched from LASIK to advanced surface ablation due to its safety and outcomes.
In addition to the safety of surface ablation, results are quite good, with as many as 98 percent of patients seeing 20/40 or better after surgery. In general, good candidates for this type of surgery include those who have mild to moderate nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism. Because not everyone is a good candidate, Drs. Berry and Stewart feel very strongly about doing a thorough examination of both the condition of your eye as well as your overall health to see if the procedure is right for you.
